Democrat Linda Sanborn upsets Republican Amy Volk in Senate race surprise
In a shocking upset, Republican Senator Amy Volk of Scarborough has lost her seat in District 30 (Gorham and parts of Buxton and Scarborough) to Democrat Linda Sanborn.

Volk is Assistant Majority Leader and an ally of Gov. Paul LePage (R). Sanborn is a retired family physician who previously served as a state representative from 2009 to 2016.

Volk led in the early vote returns, but the final unofficial tally was 11,128 to 10,957. Volk conceded on Wednesday.

Volk has a lifetime pro-environment score from Maine Conservation Voters of 50%. Sanborn's score was 97%.

Republicans have controlled the Maine Senate 18 to 17, but with Sanborn’s win Democrats have flipped the Maine Senate and secured a decisive majority with 21 D to 13 R seats and 1 still to be decided.
