Support Endangered Species Day, May 21

Senators Collins (R-ME) and Whitehouse (D-RI) are sponsoring a resolution (S. Res. 503) designating May 21, 2010, as Endangered Species Day. The U.S. Senate has passed the Endangered Species Day resolution for several previous years. Approximately 2,000 species worldwide now listed as threatened and endangered, and thousands more are imperiled. Thank Sen. Collins and ask Sen. Snowe to support Endangered Species Day.

This spring, Maine Audubon, the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Department of Conservation, and the Maine Environmental Education Association will host public dialogues across the state to discuss environmental literacy. Public meetings: May 5 in Falmouth, May 6 in Farmington, May 10 in Holden, May 11 in Houlton.

Timbered (pitch) art exhibit

“Timbered (pitch)” is a site-specific material, sound, and video installation by Bowdoinham artist Jacob Galle showing. Several rows of carefully aligned pine trees hang from points near their canopies, their trunks hovering at eye level above the floor. At the Coleman Burke Gallery in Brunswick’s Fort Andross Mill, through July 3. Reception May 14, 5-8 PM.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day, May 15

Residents of Augusta and nine surrounding communities are encouraged to dispose of their toxics on Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day. After registering in their hometowns, people may bring waste materials to the Augusta Public Works Department at 55 North St. on May 15 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The West Bay Rotary Club is sponsoring over the course of two weekends a free electronic waste collection effort at the former Rockport Elementary School. The first collection took place April 24. With the help of eight workers from eWaste Solutions of Fairfield and Auburn, the collection attracted hundreds of people from across the state. The next scheduled collection is May 1.

Maine Farmland Trust, the Belfast Free Library and the Belfast Coop are co-sponsoring a three-part film series in the Abbott Room at the library on Tuesdays, May 11 ("Meet Your Farmer"), 18 ("Dirt! The Movie") and 25 ("In Transition 1.0"). Films will begin at 6:30 p.m., are free of charge, and will be followed by a discussion.
